Lyric Theatres are found throughout the world, including in Australia. The Lyric Theatre in Sydney is a lovely venue that seats just over 2000 people and has been in operation since 1997. Recently renamed the Sydney Lyric, it brings some of the hottest musicals in the theatre world to Sydney.
The first performance that made its way to this theatre was Phantom of the Opera, which starred the formidable Michael Crawford. In the years since then, many other notable musicals have played here, including The Sound of Music, Mamma Mia, Pirates of Penzance, Miss Saigon, Annie and Legall Blonde, the Musical.
The theatre is located inside of the Star Casino, so a trip to the theatre can entail a day of entertainment between the show and the slot machines. Playing the games for a while is a good way to gear up for the fun to follow. Or, if you need some time to wind down after a performance, you can go to the casino afterward instead.
The other Lyric Theatre in Australia is located in Queensland at the Queensland Performing Arts Center in Brisbane. Opened in 1985, the QPAC features the Lyric Theatre as biggest performance space in Brisbane, with a seating capacity of about 2000. It is one of four components of the performing arts center, which also includes a concert hall, a playhouse and the Cremorne Theatre.
Many musicals are performed at Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre, as are operas and ballets. If you have a great love of the performing arts, it will certainly be satisfied when you visit this beautiful theatre.
